Convolution and correlation

چکیده
In this lecture, we’ll learn about two mathematical operations that are commonly used in signal processing, convolution and correlation. The convolution is used to linearly filter a signal, for example to smooth a spike train to estimate probability of firing. The correlation is used to characterize the statistical dependencies between two signals. A few words about the big picture. The previous lecture discussed how to construct a linear model relating firing rate and stimulus at a single time. In the next lecture, convolution and correlation will be used to construct linear models that relate neural firing rate to a stimulus, but at multiple times.

Image Correlation, Convolution and Filtering
This note discusses the basic image operations of correlation and convolution, and some aspects of one of the applications of convolution, image filtering. Image correlation and convolution differ from each other by two mere minus signs, but are used for different purposes. Correlation is more immediate to understand, and the discussion of convolution in section 2 clarifies the source of the mi...
متن کاملThe Relation between Discrete Convolution/Correlation and String Matching, and Exploring the Possibility of a Deterministic Linear-Time Algorithm for Discrete Convolution/Correlation
This paper explores the relation between discrete convolution/correlation and string matching for different specific classes of input signals. We examine the time complexity of computation for both convolution/correlation and string matching, and explore the possibility of a deterministic algorithm for discrete convolution/correlation.
متن کاملQuantum Convolution and Quantum Correlation Algorithms Are Physically Impossible
The key step in classical convolution and correlation algorithms, the componentwise multiplication of vectors after initial Fourier Transforms, is shown to be physically impossible to do on quantum states. Then this is used to show that computing the convolution or correlation of quantum state coefficients violates quantum mechanics, making convolution and correlation of quantum coefficients ph...
متن کاملAbstract structure of partial function $*$-algebras over semi-direct product of locally compact groups
This article presents a unified approach to the abstract notions of partial convolution and involution in $L^p$-function spaces over semi-direct product of locally compact groups. Let $H$ and $K$ be locally compact groups and $tau:Hto Aut(K)$ be a continuous homomorphism. Let $G_tau=Hltimes_tau K$ be the semi-direct product of $H$ and $K$ with respect to $tau$. We define left and right $tau$-c...
متن کاملThroughput/Precision Computation Of Convolution In Programmable Processors
Convolution and cross-correlation are the basis of filtering and pattern or template matching in digital signal processing (DSP). We propose a throughput scaling technique for any one-dimensional convolution kernel in programmable processors by adjusting the imprecision (distortion) of computation. Our approach is based on scalar quantization, followed by a new form of tight packing in floating...
